Just an update on the BBQ on Saturday.

I've ordered the food, so it should be about 11-12 bucks per person.
Didn't manage to get them to deliver this time so I'll need people to help come down and carry stuff earlier. (Meet at 4 at Kembangan MRT.) So far, I've got Shaun and Eileen whose confirmed helping out. If anyone else can, please volunteer too! (I'm begging you, cos really quite a lot of stuff to carry! MSG ME OR STH!)

Since no one so far has said that they can help to book it and its really really last minute right now, I was thinking of changing it to a barbeque which would be easier to plan.. If we settle for a barbeque, it should be at my house if you all dont mind and no one else can come up with anywhere else to go to.. :X

hope christmas had been great for you guys.

and yes the year is about to come to an end. looking back, it has been a year full of ups and downs. from a (singaporean) guy's point of view, ns has really taught us a lot, both in the chiong sua way and the office way. chao geng, eye power, wayang king, all talk no action etc. etc. but more importantly, NS has taught us to really pay closer attention to the things around us, see what is important to us, cherish them (i really don't mind staying in because of this). at times we scream unfair, and yearn how nice it'll be if we needn't serve. but maybe sometime in the future, we'll look back and really thank NS for giving us something school life and working life can never give us.

it'll be 2009 soon. and guys, that precious three-letter word that has been screaming out from deep down inside will come soon.

and one of my friends told me how uni life has really changed the girls somehow. i guess it's true to a certain extent. but from the last time i met up with some of you (sincerely apologise for not being able to make it for the sentosa outing), it did not seem that way. i guess that's a good sign in a way. as we tread down the road of life, do remember who you are and not lose that thought. we're all unique in our own way, and that's what's important.

before that, CNY is about a month away. do remember to buy your new clothes soon before prices start to jack up. or maybe they won't since recession is kinda bad recently. but i should be more worried about myself here since i'm earning the least among all the guys. or if you're looking for cheap clothes because recession has burned a hole in your pocket just like it did to mine, do buy them after CNY, that's when prices are at the rock bottom. or if not u can just get them at 3 for $10 at some pasar malam la.

then here's a rebuttal i just found today (though it doesn't make sense)

Come on, ya gotta believe! I mean, if you can handle flying furry animals,
then it's only a small step to the rest.

For example;
1) As admitted, it is possible that a flying reindeer can be found. I would
agree that it would be quite an unusual find, but they might exist.

2) You've relied on cascading assumptions. For example, you have assumed a
uniform distribution of children across homes. Toronto/Yorkville, or
Toronto/Cabbagetown, or other yuppie neighborhoods, have probably less than
the average (and don't forget the DINK and SINK homes (Double Income No Kids,
Single Income No Kids)), while the families with 748 starving children that
they keep showing on Vision TV while trying to pick my pocket would skew that
15% of homes down a few percent.

3) You've also assumed that each home that has kids would have at least one
good kid. What if anti-selection applies, and homes with good kids tend to
have more than their share of good kids, and other homes have nothing except
terrorists in diapers? Let's drop that number of homes down a few more
percent.

4) Santa would have to Fedex a number of packages ahead of time, since he
would not be able to fly into Air Force Bases, or into tower-controlled
areas near airports. He's get shot at over certain sections of the Middle
East, and the no-fly zones in Iraq, so he'd probably use DHL there.
Subtract some more homes.

5) I just barely passed Physics and only read Stephen Hawking's book once, but
I recall that there is some Einsteinian Theory that says time does strange
things as you move faster. In fact, when you go faster than the speed of
light time runs backward, if you do a straight line projection, connect the
dots and just ignore any singularity you might find right at the speed of
light. And don't say you can't go faster than the speed of light because
I've seen it done on TV. Jean-Luc doesn't have reindeer but he does have
matter-antimatter warp engines and a holodeck and that's good enough for me.

So Santa could go faster than light, visit all the good children which are
not uniformly distributed by either concentration in each home or by number
of children per household, and get home before he left so he can digest all
those stale cookies and warm milk yech.

6) Aha, you say, Jean-Luc has matter-antimatter warp engines, Santa only has
reindeer, where does he get the power to move that fast! You calculated the
answer! The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of
energy. Per second. Each. This is an ample supply of energy for the
maneuvering, acceleration, etc, that would be required of the loaded sleigh.
The reindeer don't evaporate or incinerate because of this energy, they
accelerate. What do you think they have antlers for, fighting over females?
Think of antlers as furry solar array panels.

7. If that's not enough, watch the news on the 24th at 11 o'clock. NORAD (which
may be one of the few government agencies with more than 3 initials in it's
name and therefore it must be more trustworthy than the rest) tracks Santa
every year and I've seen the radar shots of him approaching my house from
the direction of the North Pole. They haven't bomarck'd him yet, so they
must believe too, right?

i'm sure most of you guys have heard of the recent deaths of the 2 NSmen this week, a recruit and an officer cadet. this goes to show no matter how fit your are, you're still human. well, life is fragile indeed.

i'm at work now but dont worry, i'm not skiving or slacking or anything. i'm just taking a break after... erm... let's see... how do i phrase this... a good workout in the sun with my ex PE teachers cum colleauges. ya. PE teachers mah, keeping fit is also part of our job.

please ignore the previous post. since a lot of people suddenly cannot make it, and its unfair to make those who can make it pay for the entire chalet because it was planned long long ago, this is the final amount each person has to pay for the chalet.

if you're not going for the chalet, please pay $19 each to cover the chalet costs. (preferrably during grad night if you're going. if not, pass to someone who's going.)

IS THERE A SANTA CLAUS?

1) No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer which only Santa has ever seen.

2) There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to 15% of the total - 378 million according to Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there's at least one good child in each.

3) Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seems logical). This works out to 822.6 visits per second.

This is to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept), we are now talking about .78 miles per household, a total trip of 75-1/2 million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus feeding and etc.

This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man- made vehicle on earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per second - a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles per hour.

4) The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized lego set (2 pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see point #1) could pull TEN TIMES the normal amount, we cannot do the job with eight, or even nine. We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload - not even counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons. Again, for comparison - this is four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth.

5) 353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air resistance - this will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as spacecrafts re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy.

In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second. Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.

In conclusion -

If Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he's dead now.

Hey 06s14... juz wanted to say happy holidays :) although not so much of holidays lahh.... since everybody mugging for prelims and A levels.. But never mind, can think of the holidays after that yeah? except for tingyang, who still wants to mug at the chalet.

Anyways.... I came across something which I think may let us do something together after A levels....

Standard Chartered Marathon. No... not run the marathon... but we can do volunteer work there.... got pre-race days and on race day itself which is 2nd dec (1 day before grad nite) so yup.... thought maybe we can sign up as a class and have the same positions or smth =)

most, if not all the dates are after A levels. there's probably one or two briefing dates in the midst of A levels, but can always just send one or two person down to go for it.. don't think it'll b a big deal also.

CHEM PRELIM PAPER '06 ANSWERS

hey these are the missing answers to the prelim paper (chemistry)..(after my session with lkp)

Either 5b) need to know that Mg + NH3 ---> Mg(x)N(y) + hydrogen
Mg(x)N(y) + water -----> Mg(OH)2 + NH3
u balance then u will realise that x=3 and y=2.. (coefficient of water is 6)
the figures are just there for u to check your final answers..

5di) Ksp of BaCO3 is lower than that of CaCO3..
if small quantities of CO2 were to be detected..
BaCO3 is preferred becos the [ carbonate ion] might be high enough such that the I.P of BaCO3 is higher than Ksp of BaCO3 but low enough such that I.P of CaCO3 is smaller than Ksp(CaCO3)..

dii) one disadvantage of using Ba(OH)2 is becos its such a reactive base such that it will be able to react with CO2 in the air...

our junior class is having a class outing this thursday, 11th january, after their orientation programme which will end at around 4 pm.
since there has been no junior-senior session planned for their orientation, we are inviting all of you to come too so that you'll get to know them!
it'll most probably be at kap.

Hi to all council heads, class reps and cip reps :D

We are a group of 6 from 06s13 and we are currently working on a project - MINDS amazing race. We are also working with a group of students from NUS, MINDS (the movement for the intellectually disabled of Singapore) and PVC (project vibrant colours) on this project. As the name suggest, we hope that through this event we are able to raise funds for MINDS.

This would be a large-scale event and we hope to get more about 2000 participants for this amazing race. We would be getting students in groups of 5 from every secondary and junior college in singapore to participate. This event would we held on the 7th of January, from 9am till 3pm. Participants would be racing in areas around Singapore at more than 60 stations island-wide. We are hoping to get at least 3 volunteers for each station to be stationmasters. Thus we are hoping to get your support for this matter. We are approaching you (students of njc) because as time is running short, we are unable to quickly find volunteers from the public. Also, it would be easier to contact everyone during morning assemblies if we have announcements to make.

As for the 'job scope', we not only need help for the day itself, we would also need help for the packing of goody bags. Also, there would be various meetings before the actual date to delegate specific jobs to each person, such as which station would which person be at and what would the person be doing etc.

As you know for amazing races, there would be different activities for each station. Thus volunteers would be in charge of different games, such as 'Goo relay', 'Dunk', 'Balloon race' etc. For each specific game, stationmasters would be in charge of setting up of the station on that day and cleaning up etc.

Besides work on the day itself, if any of you are interested, may we invite you to join our discussions as soon as possible. We are currently in the midst of contacting sponsors and authorities for this event and help would also be widely appreciated.

Having said all that, i hope that every class would offer their services to us. Do not worry as CIP hours would be given to every volunteer. We hope to get more than 200 volunteers for this event, of course the more the merrier. Please try to contact your classmates as soon as possible and give us your reply. We hope to get replies in terms of classes so that information would be easier to spread in future.

so we decided on a date: 7th nov, same day as OP n 1 day b4 class chalet.
time: dunno yet. probably after last PW grp has presented in our class then go watch after that.
